We have combined
three tools (applets) into one package called DVToolkit. DVToolkit
includes modified versions of the Profile Plotter and Color Mapper.
It also includes another tool called the DxT Profiler (Depth vs
Time Profiler). The DxT Profiler graphically shows how the lake
data collected by our RUSS units changes over time. Below you will
see an example of the type of profile that can be created with the
DxT Profiler.

Using
DVToolkit and the DxT Profiler:
On a PC, the
DVToolkit runs on recent versions of both Netscape and Internet
Explorer. (Explorer seems to be quicker at opening the data files.)
Mac users are currently limited to Internet Explorer with MRJ (Mac
Runtime for Java).
The box below
shows if the version of Java your browser is using is current enough
to run DVToolkit
- If your
browser fails to "pass" you can go to this
page to find out what to do or you can check with your
computer specialist for assistance.
- If your browser
"passed", you can either use the DVToolkit online, or you can
download the DVToolkit package. Please STOP and consider
the following:
- Using
DxT Profiler from the DVToolkit online may be very slow, depending
on your computer's memory and the speed of your Internet connection.
In a worse case scenario - a slow computer using a 14.4 modem,
your computer may be tied up for many minutes as it prepares
to use the data with the DxT Profiler.
- The
DVTools program is optimized to run from your local file system.
We recommend you do one simple download and then you can use
the tools directly from your computer, even when you are not
connected to the Internet.
- For
optimal use of the DxT Profiler we recommend using a fast
(greater than 100 MHz) computer with an 800 x 600 display
showing more than 256 colors.

Or
download the DVToolkit:
Complete the
following sequence to download the DVToolkit package that includes
the three tools and the complete set of lakes data. Once you have
downloaded the DVToolkit you can use all three tools to explore
the data without an internet connection.
- Create a
new folder on your hard drive or floppy. Name this folder "DVTools".
- Click
here to download the DVToolkit (file name: DVTools.zip,
size: ~1200 Kb) Unzip the contents of this file to the new folder
"DVTools." This file contains all of the tools plus all of the
data we have collected from the RUSS units at the study sites.
Note: all the files must go into a folder (subdirectory), even
if you are installing them on a floppy.
- Use your
Java 1.1 capable browser to open the DVToolkit. At this point
you do not need to have an active Internet connection. Simply
use your browser to work with the tools. You will open the file
by using the "File" menu in your browser and then selecting "Open."
Browse through your folders and files to find the folder you have
created named "DVTools." Select and open the file named "DVTools.html"
in that folder. If you download the package you only have to download
it once, rather than each time you run the program.
