The Great Salt Lake is famous worldwide, but in the region it is notorious for the so-called “lake stink”. The smells can be unpleasant, but are generally not harmful to health. Some basic knowledge about the sources of odours can help lake lovers identify smells. It is produced when sulphate is broken down in the absence of oxygen, usually at the bottom of a stratified lake.
Although its waters stretched further than I could see in any direction, I knew from family trips to West Mountain that its smell did not change when it was on a rocky shore in the shadow of a mountain.
What do you call the smell of a lake?
In summer, the surface of the water is warmest, and the deeper you go, the colder the water gets. However, if there are enough cyanobacteria to produce a noticeable odour, there are enough to produce toxins that are above a safe limit, IF the cyanobacteria are toxin-producing forms. Most often the H2S is smelled in the soil water that is sampled; the H2S usually remains trapped in the soil water layer until it mixes in the fall. Actually, all algae produce some odour when they are abundant, but certain algae can produce a specific odour when they are abundant.
In lakes and reservoirs, there is often an increased algal bloom on the water surface when there is a lot of heat and direct sunlight.
Why does a lake smell?

The area about 15 miles north of Salt Lake City gets its distinctive smell when the nutrient-rich wastewater feeds algae blooms, which in turn feed bacteria after they die, Wurtsbaugh told the Standard-Examiner newspaper in Ogden. In lakes, the presence of H2S means oxygen has been depleted and the demand has become so great that sulphate (SO) is broken down.
Does fresh water have a smell?
This research topic addresses the current understanding of T&Os produced by microorganisms in freshwater ecosystems. This can happen when water comes into contact with organic material or with certain minerals such as pyrite. Cyanobacteria have been described as the most important group of T&Os producers in freshwater environments, with numerous strains and metabolic pathways identified. Freshwater fish generally do not accumulate TMAO because their environment is less salty than their cells.
For example, water stored in the refrigerator absorbs the odour of pungent foods such as onions or garlic over time. So my question is: does water have a smell? In Iceland, for example, near Myvatn, there is a lot of volcanic activity and the water from the tap (especially the warm water because it dissolves better) smells like rotten eggs because of the sulphur.
