Presque Isle State Park: Beaches and Camping Nearby
Presque Isle is a free, day-use state park on Lake Erie near Erie, Pennsylvania. Here are the beaches, swim rules, boat launches and campgrounds nearby.
On this page
Presque Isle State Park is a 3,200-acre sandy peninsula that arches into Lake Erie. It is free to enter, it has beaches, trails, boat launches and fishing piers, and it has no campground of its own. Overnight stays are in the Erie area, which is why most visitors pair a day at the park with a campsite or cabin nearby.
This guide pulls together what Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), Visit Erie, the National Weather Service and the nearby campgrounds publish. We did not visit, and beach staffing, hours and closures change by season. Check the park’s posted notices before you go.
Presque Isle at a glance#

The peninsula is attached to the mainland four miles west of downtown Erie, and it creates Presque Isle Bay, which DCNR calls a wide and deep harbor for the city. DCNR classifies the park as day-use, with year-round recreation. It is open every day of the year from 5 a.m. to sunset, day-use areas close at dusk, and after sunset only tenants and people engaged in evening driving are permitted in the park. The road system forms a loop of about 13 miles.
Beaches and swimming#
Visit Erie describes Presque Isle as having 13 beaches, each with different amenities. Not all of them are for swimming, and not all are guarded.
The eight numbered swimming beaches. The DCNR recreation guide lists eight guarded beaches: Beach 1, Beach 3 (Barracks), Beach 6 (Lyons), Beach 7 (Waterworks), Beach 8 (Pettinato), Beach 9 (Pine Tree), Beach 10 (Budny) and Beach 11 (Kohler). The Mill Road Beaches, which DCNR names as Stone Jetty, Short Jetty, Saw Mill, Ainsworth and Goddard, are a separate group, and swimming is prohibited at them.
Which ones are open changes. Visit Erie says guarded beaches change frequently and tells visitors to check the sign at the park’s entrance. Its beach page also said Beach 10 was closed for swimming for the 2026 season because of construction updates. Treat the list above as a guide to names, not a daily schedule.
Season and hours. DCNR says beaches are open daily from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day unless otherwise posted, with regular hours of noon to 7:30 p.m. Visit Erie gave noon to 7:15 p.m. for the same period. The two pages disagree by 15 minutes, so go by what is posted.
Where you may swim. DCNR says people may not swim outside designated guarded zones. They may wade up to the knees, no more than 10 feet from shore.
A few beach notes from DCNR.
- Beach 11 is described as the most sheltered beach, with shallow water, a large sandy beach and a beach house with changing areas and restrooms.
- Beach 8 has a ramp that provides ADA access to the water’s edge, and beach wheelchairs are available at the Public Safety Building.
- Beach 3, the Mill Road Beaches and Beach 11 are identified as smoke-free beaches.
- Dogs. Inside designated guarded zones, leashed dogs are permitted in the tree line area only. Outside them, leashed dogs are permitted on the sand and in the water. Dogs must never be left unattended, and owners are responsible for cleaning up after them.

Lake Erie is not a pond#
The National Weather Service says rip currents can occur at any beach with breaking waves, including Great Lakes beaches, and that they most typically form at low spots or breaks in sandbars and near structures such as groins, jetties and piers. At a high risk level, it says rip currents are life-threatening to anyone entering the surf. If you are caught in one, the NWS advice is not to swim against the current and to get help from a lifeguard.
Cold matters too. The NWS says cold shock can be just as severe and dangerous in water of 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit as in water at 35 degrees, and that wearing a life jacket significantly increases the chance of survival. Our guides on why Lake Erie is dangerous, Great Lakes swimming safety and how lakes have rip currents go into more detail, and how to know if a lake is safe to swim in covers the basics.
Trails and fishing#
DCNR’s hiking page reports 11 miles of trails. The Karl Boyes Multi-Purpose Trail and its extension make a 13.5-mile paved circuit that is designated a National Recreation Trail and is ADA accessible. DCNR says it is popular with bicyclists, in-line skaters and joggers. Because the 11-mile and 13.5-mile numbers come from different trail categories, do not add them together. DCNR also warns that fluctuating lake levels can seasonally flood portions of trails, so waterproof footwear helps.
For fishing, DCNR lists popular shore locations including Waterworks and the Ferry Dock, the east and west piers, Perry Monument, North Pier, the lagoons and all boat landings. It says there are ADA accessible fishing piers at the Rotary Pavilion, East Pier, West Pier and North Pier. For what bites in the area, see our Lake Erie fishing guide.

Boating at Presque Isle#
DCNR lists four launching areas that can accommodate various sizes of craft:
- Vista Launch is recommended only for small watercraft and personal watercraft.
- Niagara Launch has two ramps and can accommodate small to medium-sized craft.
- West Pier Launch is the largest facility, with four launching lanes, and is recommended for larger watercraft.
- Lagoon Launch can accommodate small to medium-sized craft.
The park marina is open May 1 through October 31, has nearly 500 slips and can accommodate boats up to 42 feet.
Rules that catch people out.
- All boats must display a current boat registration, including motorboats and non-powered boats.
- Internal combustion engines are prohibited in the interior lagoons, which DCNR defines as the continuous body of water between Misery Bay and Marina Lake, excluding Graveyard Pond.
- A slow, minimum-height-swell speed must be observed in all park waters, which includes all waters within 500 feet of the shoreline.
- Fluctuations in lake levels may affect launching, and DCNR warns that water conditions can change dramatically in a very short period, so heed all weather notices.
Our boat ramp checklist for first-time boaters is a good pre-launch run-through, and the guide to Lake Erie public access points covers the other launches along the Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York shores.

Where to camp near Presque Isle#
DCNR’s recreation guide says overnight accommodations are not located in the park and that privately owned accommodations are available nearby. These are the closest options we could confirm from the operators’ own pages.
- Sara’s Campground. Located directly between Presque Isle State Park and Waldameer Amusement Park and Water World. It advertises more than 100 campsites along both the bayside and lakeside beaches, and lists seasonal camping from April 1 through October 31. Pets are permitted on a leash in the wooded areas, not on the beach. Tent camping is first come, first served, and reservations are not accepted for any beach camping.
- Lampe Campground. In Erie’s Waterfront District, with 56 waterfront campsites alongside Lampe Marina and a bike path to bayfront attractions and Presque Isle State Park. It also lists nearby boat rentals, fishing charters and free public boat launch ramps.
- Erie KOA. Says it is only 9 miles from Presque Isle, with RV sites, deluxe cabins and premium tent sites. It is at 6645 West Road in McKean, and its page showed a season of April 17 to October 18. Check the current dates.
We could not confirm exact drive times from Sara’s or Lampe to the park, only that they are close. For a wider list, see campgrounds near Lake Erie in Pennsylvania.
Erie Bluffs State Park is not a campground. DCNR designates it as a day-use park, with the exception of fishing and boating, and swimming is prohibited. Its Elk Creek Access is open 24 hours for anglers, and DCNR notes that steelhead runs there from late fall to early spring.

Planning your visit#
- Go early on summer weekends. We did not find an official parking-capacity count, only that parking is free.
- Check the beach sign on arrival. The guarded list changes, and Beach 10 was listed as closed for swimming in 2026.
- Plan for the weather. Lake Erie conditions change fast, and DCNR urges visitors to heed weather notices.
- Electric vehicles. DCNR says two-plug charging stations are available at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, Beach 8 and Marina parking lots.
- Other Lake Erie beaches. Our Lake Erie beaches near Cleveland guide covers the Ohio side, and how deep Lake Erie is puts the lake in context.
